James Patterson, MD
Dr. James Patterson is a Denver native and the son of a former Denver urologist. He has two sons, Colin and Cameron.
Dr. Patterson graduated from Cherry Creek High School and spent one year living in Norway as an American Field Service foreign exchange student. He received his undergraduate degree from Brown University in 1976. He then completed medical school at the University of Colorado in 1981. After serving his medical internship year in Christchurch, New Zealand, he returned to the University of Colorado for his residency in ophthalmology.
Since finishing his residency, Dr. Patterson has been in practice with Colorado Ophthalmology Associates excelling in refractive surgery, cataract surgery, and glaucoma surgery. Dr. Patterson has been performing refractive surgery since 1987 and started performing PRK and LASIK surgery in 1996, when they were first approved in the United States. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado.
Dr. Patterson was one of the founding physicians of the Clear Vision Laser Centers in the Denver metropolitan area. He is also a member and past president of the Colorado Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and is a fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons.
Outside of his rewarding profession, Dr. Patterson enjoys skiing, sailing, hiking, and bicycling.
Robert Keyser, MD
Dr. Robert Keyser currently lives in Denver with his wife Yvette. He has three grown children, Rob, Scott, and Jennifer and two grandchildren, Ben and Emma.
Dr. Keyser graduated from high school in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He attended undergraduate studies at Kalamazoo College, graduating in 1964. He completed medical school at the University of Michigan in 1968. Following medical school, he did a rotating internship at the University of Washington, Harborview Hospital.
After two-and-a-half years of service in the U.S. Navy as a flight surgeon, he moved to Colorado where he completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. There, Dr. Keyser was head fellow and trained in ophthalmic pathology from 1975 to 1976. Dr. Keyser joined Colorado Ophthalmology Associates the following year. He excels in refractive surgery, cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, and retinal laser surgery. He has been board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology since 1976 and is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where he teaches residents on a weekly basis.
Dr. Keyser is a member and past president of the Colorado Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, a fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a member of the Denver Medical Society.

J. Timothy Ammons, MD
Dr. J. Timothy Ammons has been performing cataract refractive surgery since 1992 and laser refractive surgery since 1996, when the first FDA-approved excimer laser arrived in Denver. He is dedicated to personally caring for patients throughout the preoperative, surgical, and postoperative experience, believing that personalized care leads to optimal outcomes. Dr. Ammons also has an active cataract, glaucoma, and general ophthalmology practice.
Dr. Ammons grew up in Denver’s Parkhill neighborhood. He attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude in 1979. After college, he married and took his wife, Mary, also from Denver, to England. As a Marshall scholar, he earned his Master’s degree at Oxford University. He and Mary returned to Denver, where Dr. Ammons attended the University of Colorado, School of Medicine and continued with his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Ammons joined Colorado Ophthalmology Associates in 1993. He is a board-certified member of the Colorado Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, currently serving as president of the society, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Appointed by the Governor, he served four years as a member of the Colorado Board of Medical Examiners, chairing panel A, before returning to dedicate himself full time to his ophthalmology practice.
The Ammons’ are busy at home raising five children, aged 9 to 21. Dr. Ammons enjoys trying to keep up with them while skiing, mountain biking, climbing, and whitewater kayaking, although as he and his children get older, he finds it increasingly difficult.
James Melzer, OD
Dr. James Melzer is a second-generation Colorado native. After completing his undergraduate studies at Colorado State University, he pursued graduate studies at the University of North Dakota and Washington State University. Following three years of post-doctoral research on the effects of radiation on genetic material, Dr. Melzer moved his family to Buffalo, New York to teach biology and genetics at Canisius College. After five years of teaching, Dr. Melzer returned to school at the Michigan College of Optometry, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1999.
Dr. Melzer joined Colorado Ophthalmology Associates in 1999. He specializes in contact lens fitting as well as primary eye care. Specialty contact lens fitting for people with keratoconus (irregular corneas) or post-surgery defects is one of Dr. Melzer’s favorite and most rewarding jobs. In addition to this, Dr. Melzer works extensively with patients who suffer from dry eye syndrome.
Dr. Melzer lives in Littleton with his wife and two children, and is very glad to be back in Colorado. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, skiing, biking, and gardening.
